Treasurer Oaks recognizes students for winning statewide investment competition at January 23 awards banquet

SALT LAKE CITY – January 23, 2026 – Students from across the state will take the stage today as winners of the Fall 2025 Utah Treasurer’s Investment Challenge.

Nearly 2,200 students, representing both urban and rural communities, competed in elementary, middle, and high school divisions.

“As a teacher, this program is incredibly valuable because it reinforces curriculum standards while actively engaging students,” said Heather Bergholm, a teacher at Frontier Middle School in Eagle Mountain. “It gives students an interactive way to explore investing concepts and helps make complex financial topics more relevant and accessible in the classroom.”

The Utah Treasurer’s Investment Challenge, offered at no cost to schools, is a classroom-based simulation for students in grades 4–12. Teams of three to five students manage a hypothetical $100,000 portfolio over a 10-week period, investing in stocks and diversified funds traded on major U.S. exchanges, while tracking performance and adjusting strategies as market conditions change. Beyond the competition, the program is designed to strengthen financial knowledge, reinforce economics instruction, and encourage critical thinking. The program also supports educators by offering optional curriculum resources aligned with Utah’s financial literacy Strands and Standards.

The awards banquet will be held at noon in the South Conference Center of the North Capitol Building. Registration check-in will be at 11:30 a.m. This event is open to the media. Due to capacity limitations, other guests may attend by invitation only.

The Utah Treasurer’s Office hosts Investment Challenge competitions during both the fall and spring semesters and encourages Utah educators to participate in upcoming challenges by registering at treasurer.utah.gov/investment-challenge.
