State Treasurer Marlo M. Oaks to recognize Utah students and teachers for winning The Stock Market Game, a statewide financial education competition
SALT LAKE CITY – May 19, 2022 – Utah Treasurer Marlo M. Oaks announced that his office is hosting an awards banquet to honor the winners of the Spring 2022 Utah Stock Market Game on Friday, May 20. The banquet will feature student speeches and a keynote address by James Fletcher, Founder and Chief Investment Officer of Ethos Investment Management.
More than 3,200 students from across the state participated in the Spring 2022 game, competing in elementary, middle, and high school divisions.
The Stock Market Game is a 10-week simulation of Wall Street investing that provides a framework for Utah students to learn about the U.S. economy and financial markets. During the game, students invest a hypothetical $100,000 in common stocks and diversified investment funds traded on major exchanges. Teams are ranked based on the ending value of their investment portfolios.
Vista Heights Middle School student Layla Bill’s team took third place in the middle school division. She said, “We learned a lot about the stock market by playing this game, but we also learned some great business skills that will help us in our futures. We learned how to collaborate, we learned how to use and share a spreadsheet in google sheets, we learned how to read a stock chart, and the importance of buying low and selling high.”
Treasurer Oaks said, “The Stock Market Game is an effective tool that helps students understand fundamental stock market dynamics, how future revenue and earnings growth expectations drive stock prices, the risks involved in short-term market fluctuations, and other investment concepts. I appreciate the efforts of our teachers to help improve the financial knowledge of our next generation, and I’m proud of the students for their hard work.”
The awards banquet will be held at noon in the Canyons Ballroom at the Sheraton Salt Lake City Hotel. Registration check-in will be at 11:30 a.m., and the program will begin at noon. This event is open to the media. Due to capacity limitations, other guests may attend by invitation only.

- 2nd Place: Edith Bowen Laboratory School (Logan)
- 3rd Place: Adams Elementary School (Layton)
- Middle/Jr. High School Division
- 1st Place: Timberline Middle School (Alpine)
- 2nd Place: Legacy Jr. High School (Layton)
- 3rd Place: Vista Heights Middle School (Saratoga Springs)
- High School Division
- 1st Place: Utah County Academy of Science (Orem)
- 2nd Place: Skyline High School (Salt Lake)
- 3rd Place: Riverton High School (Riverton)
