Utah students to be honored for winning statewide investment competition at January 27 awards banquet

State Treasurer Marlo M. Oaks to recognize Utah students and teachers for winning The Stock Market Game, a statewide financial education competition

SALT LAKE CITY – January 26, 2022 – Utah Treasurer Marlo M. Oaks is hosting an awards banquet to honor the winners of the Fall 2022 Utah Stock Market Game on Friday, January 27. The banquet will feature student speeches and a keynote address by Amy Hu Sunderland, Portfolio Manager for Grandeur Peak Global Advisors.

More than 3,900 students from across the state participated in the Fall 2022 game, competing in elementary, middle, and high school divisions.

The Stock Market Game is a 10-week simulation of Wall Street trading specifically designed to teach 4th – 12th grade Utah students about the U.S. economy and financial markets. During the game, students invest a hypothetical $100,000 in common stocks and diversified investment funds traded on major exchanges. Teams are ranked based on the ending value of their investment portfolios.

Frontier Middle School student Aspen LeClaire’s team took third place in the middle school  division. She said, “I learned a lot of new things through playing the Stock Market Game. I learned about the importance of buying low and selling high. I also learned how to do some research about stock companies’ history and whether they had success or not over recent months. I also learned how to be patient and try to wait for a stock to turn around, even when I wanted to sell it off right away because it wasn’t doing so hot. Overall, it was a really fun experience learning some new things I didn’t know anything about before this game.”

Treasurer Oaks said, “The Stock Market Game is a valuable tool that assists students in understanding the core principles of the stock market, including how future revenue and earnings projections influence stock prices and the potential hazards associated with short-term market volatility, among other investment concepts. My admiration goes to our educators for their endeavors in enhancing the financial acumen of future generations, and I am proud of the students for their diligent efforts.”

The awards banquet will be held at noon in the Canyons Ballroom at the Sheraton Salt Lake City  Hotel. Registration check-in will be at 11:30 a.m., and the program will begin at noon. This event  is open to the media. Due to capacity limitations, other guests may attend by invitation only.
