What is the Utah Treasurer's Investment Challenge?
The Utah Treasurer’s Investment Challenge (UTIC) is a free, statewide 10-week stock market simulation for students in grades 4–12, offered during the fall and spring semesters.
Teams of 3–5 students, guided by a teacher, manage a virtual investment portfolio using real-world market data while learning the fundamentals of long-term investing, diversification, and compound growth. The program strengthens financial literacy and reinforces analytical thinking, problem-solving, and real-world decision-making skills in an engaging, competitive format.
UTIC is designed to be flexible and easy to implement. It can be incorporated into any classroom setting or run as a stand-alone enrichment opportunity. Optional assignments and teacher resources are available directly within the platform to support participation.
There is no cost to participate, and registration is simple. The top three teams in each division are recognized at a statewide awards luncheon and receive prizes, including my529 college savings certificates.
UTIC is administered by the Utah Office of State Treasurer in partnership with the Utah Financial Empowerment Coalition through donated and fundraised support.
Optional UTIC Writing Contest
In addition to the stock market challenge, students may participate in an optional statewide essay contest designed to deepen their understanding of investing concepts and financial decision-making.
Essays are judged by program sponsors and financial professionals, and three winners are selected from each division.
Essay Contest Awards include:
• 1st Place – $100 gift card, my529 certificate, trophy, and banquet invitation
• 2nd Place – $50 gift card, my529 certificate, trophy, and banquet invitation
• 3rd Place – $25 gift card, my529 certificate, trophy, and banquet invitation
Rules
Participation is limited to Utah teachers and students (grades 4-12), homeschool, and afterschool program advisors.
A teacher must register using the links provided, create teams, and provide instruction and oversight for students. Students may not register on their own. Teachers must have internet access and an email address.
Teams must make their first transaction by the end of the fifth week, or they will be eliminated from the game for that session.
To encourage diversification, teams are allowed to invest a maximum of 25% in a single company or fund.
A maximum of one team per teacher will be able to place in the game and attend the banquet.
