Writing Prompts

Elementary Division:

Research and profile a successful investor, company, or investment firm from Wall Street. Explain their investment strategies and philosophies, and analyze the keys to their success.


Middle/Jr. High & High School Divisions:

The Impact of World Events on Financial Markets: Analyze a recent global event and its effects on stocks, bonds, and other investments. Discuss how investors can navigate those situations and make informed financial decisions.

Submission Due Date

December 15, 2023

Instructions for Submission and Rules

All essay submissions are due by 11:59 PM, 11:59 PM MST, on December 15, 2023. Advisors should submit their students’ essays online at treasurer.utah.gov/writing-contest. Three winners in each division (Elementary, Middle/Jr. High, and High School) will be
recognized at the Utah Treasurer’s Investment Challenge Banquet where they will receive prizes, including a trophy, my529 account certificate, and a gift card. Essays will be reviewed by a team of judges representing government and industry. Essays will be screened for plagiarism and use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Indication of plagiarism will result in disqualification.

Prizes

The first place winner and their advisors will receive a $100 gift card, my529 account certificate, trophy, and the opportunity to attend the Utah Treasurer’s Investment Challenge Banquet, hosted by Treasurer Marlo Oaks and the Utah Financial Empowerment Coalition. 

The second place winner and their advisor will receive a $50 gift card, my529 account certificate, trophy, and the opportunity to attend the Utah Treasurer’s Investment Challenge Banquet, hosted by Treasurer Marlo Oaks and the Utah Financial Empowerment Coalition.

The third place winner and their advisor will receive a $25 gift card, my529 account certificate, trophy, and the opportunity to attend the Utah Treasurer’s Investment Challenge Banquet, hosted by Treasurer Marlo Oaks and the Utah Financial Empowerment Coalition.
