Civil War medal makes its way to St. George heir

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) – May 31, 2021 – Thousands of Utahns have property that’s waiting for them in state coffers. It’s often left behind and forgotten.

Elizabeth Gray of St. George just got some treasured family heirlooms, including a Civil War medal. She’s the great granddaughter of Hiram Dexter, who served in the war.

Gray hung up on the state’s unclaimed property outreach specialist, Raynie Paxton, the first time she called in 2018.

“I was really rude to that lady,” Gray said. “I’m so ashamed of myself.”
